Cup Final Woes for 1st XI

Monday 24th July 2017

The 1st XI faced Armagh on Sunday 23rd July in the T20 Trophy Final at The Lawn, Waringstown. After overnight rain it would be an important toss to see who bowled first, unfortunately Jamie Gibson’s recent run of losing the toss (won 1 out of 15 so far this season) continued and we were inserted on a pitch which offered a bit of assistance early on. Jared Barnes, the Armagh ‘pro’, used the conditions to his advantage and was practically unplayable. He accounted for both Davi...

Chairman's Luncheon - 3rd June 2017

Tuesday 11th July 2017

I’m delighted to say that my luncheon was better supported than ever this year with forty five members, friends and guests joining me for a great afternoon’s craic. Luckily we even had cricket to watch although several heavy downpours did punctuate the 1st’s game against Armagh. Everyone commented on how fantastic the ground was looking especially the addition of the two new ‘ball stop’ nets and all the new sponsor’s boards. Given all the ground improvement...

Challenge Cup Woes Followed by League Defeat

Thursday 29th June 2017

The 1st XI were comprehensively beaten by a well drilled Muckamore side in the Challenge Cup on Saturday 17 June. The day got off to a good start by winning the toss however events began to go downhill from that moment on. Muckamore saw off the new ball and from there amounted a total of 294 which would only be chased if Woodvale could get off to a strong start. This was not to be the case as Woodvale lost early wickets and could never recover. Mark Irwin was the only Woodvale batsman that offer...

Victory at Ballygomartin Road

Tuesday 06th June 2017

The 1st XI faced a tough Armagh side at Ballygomartin Road on Saturday who had  already picked up 2 wins from 3 in Section One. It was pleasing to see the 1st XI playing at Ballygomartin Road for the first time this season after more early season works on the ground. The game was also well attended by ex-players and club sponsors as they had been invited to the annual Chairman’s Day ably hosted by Gareth Evans. It would be fair to say that enough red wine was consumed to last the mont...

View from the Score Box

Tuesday 23rd May 2017

What a fantastic day for Jamie Gibson's 1st XI with a third successive victory this season this time over Holywood at Seapark in the Arthur J Gallagher Challenge Cup. After losing the toss and being invited to bat, Woodvale's top order failed to cash in on what looked like a 'belter ' at Seapark and it took  two gritty innings from stalwart Paul Robinson (73) and 'hop along' Mark Irwin (57) along with a few cameos to post a moderate 239. The thought was that it ma...

Solid Start to 2017 for Woodvale

Tuesday 23rd May 2017

As always the beginning of a new season has its challenges. However one could say that it has been an solid and acceptable start for all teams concerned.   The 1st XI have started their league campaign with two wins from two in Section One. Under the new captaincy of Jamie Gibson the campaign could not have got off to a better start with two solid victories over tough opposition in Donaghcloney and Derriaghy. Attention has been drawn thus far to Section One for the wrong reasons with mu...
