Weekend Review - 12 August

Michael and Tucker come to the party!

In a week where Woodvale were accused of being party poopers the 1st XI celebrated in style with a resounding victory over neighbours Cliftonville at Ballygomartins ever improving cricket Stadium. Not for the first this season ‘Tucker’ Hill grabbed a fistful of wickets 5-36 to take his tally for the season so far into the forties. He was well supported by big Baz Robinson 1 for 12 off his 10 and Ferhan Saeed 2-22.

Cliftonville were deep i...n the mire and the burden of recovering the innings was on the sizeable shoulders of Johnny Terret, his knock of 89 was the back bone of the visitors 168 all out. Ex-Woodvale man Brian Kelso rolled back the years with a gutsy 23 and the talented Matty McCord chipped in with 21.

With Cookie on his hols the opening slot was filled by Sam Fleming (15) and when he became Andersons first of three victims, Saeed joined Michael Irwin to put on the match winning partnership. Although Saeed holed out on 47 the damage had already been done and Irwin, with the help of wee bro Mark and Paul Robinson saw the home side through to their target.

Woodvales’ much lauded hospitality was on show during and after the match as both teams enjoyed a few hours ‘craic’ and partied late into the evening.

Unfortunately the 2nds let their challenge for the league title slip at Comber and although the thirds also lost their game at least they were able to fulfil the fixture. With 75 registered players you would wonder why we have a problem getting three teams out on any day?
