Cup Final Woes for 1st XI

Monday 24th July 2017

The 1st XI faced Armagh on Sunday 23rd July in the T20 Trophy Final at The Lawn, Waringstown. After overnight rain it would be an important toss to see who bowled first, unfortunately Jamie Gibson’s recent run of losing the toss (won 1 out of 15 so far this season) continued and we were inserted on a pitch which offered a bit of assistance early on.

Jared Barnes, the Armagh ‘pro’, used the conditions to his advantage and was practically unplayable. He accounted for both David Connelly and Mark Irwin within the 1st 3 overs and Woodvale were on the back foot from the start. Only Farhan Saeed offered any real resistance with a few lusty blows in his 32, as we finished our 20 overs on 91 for 9. Barnes no doubt was the pick of the Armagh attack with figures of 4 overs, 3 for 5!

Armagh set about the total in positive fashion, however the introduction of Arbaz Khan brought about 3 quick wickets. Unfortunately for us Barnes managed to see Armagh home despite 2 wickets in 2 balls from Thomas Hill – If only we could have managed another 30 runs! Que sera, sera……. Overall though it was a deserved victory for Armagh who outplayed us in all 3 disciplines, with the Armagh ‘pro’ receiving man of the match for his 3 for 5 and 30 not out.

On behalf of the 1st XI we would like to thank our supporters for making the trip down to Waringstown for the 11.30am start. Also as a club we would also like to thank Waringstown for hosting the final and for the hospitality shown to Woodvale CC (Beer, Burgers, Music, PA system…… oh and more beer!).

PS – Safe to say the boys enjoyed the Premier League Final as well….
