Challenge Cup Woes Followed by League Defeat

Thursday 29th June 2017

The 1st XI were comprehensively beaten by a well drilled Muckamore side in the Challenge Cup on Saturday 17 June. The day got off to a good start by winning the toss however events began to go downhill from that moment on. Muckamore saw off the new ball and from there amounted a total of 294 which would only be chased if Woodvale could get off to a strong start. This was not to be the case as Woodvale lost early wickets and could never recover. Mark Irwin was the only Woodvale batsman that offered any fight as the side were bowled out for 122.

The following week saw Lurgan visit Ballygomartin Road. The form table was turned upside down as Lurgan posted 254 which proved to be too much for a below par Woodvale side. Again the bowlers proved ineffective on another excellent Woodvale deck and, following on from the defeat to Muckamore, the batsmen failed to make use of the surface which offered little in the way of movement. Early wickets prevented a strong platform from being built and it left the middle/ lower order too much to do in the end losing by 32 runs.

A midweek T20 semi-final at Seapark will be a welcome game as the side look to get back to winning ways. The 1st XI return to Holywood on Saturday for a league encounter which will be the third visit already this season to Seapark.
