Solid Start to 2017 for Woodvale

Tuesday 23rd May 2017

As always the beginning of a new season has its challenges. However one could say that it has been an solid and acceptable start for all teams concerned.

The 1st XI have started their league campaign with two wins from two in Section One. Under the new captaincy of Jamie Gibson the campaign could not have got off to a better start with two solid victories over tough opposition in Donaghcloney and Derriaghy. Attention has been drawn thus far to Section One for the wrong reasons with much debate over the “Pro” scenario, as some clubs decide to go with one and others not. This scenario will create even more competitiveness in an already tough league section.

Individual performances have stood out also for the 1st XI with Farhan Saeed stepping up with the bat in his third season with the club. A solid knock of 81* against Donaghcloney led his side to 248-5 in their 50 overs backed up by his maiden century at Woodvale leading his side to a comprehensive 8 wicket win over league favourites Derriaghy a week later at Queensway. In the same game, Michael Irwin, with the pressures of captaincy now off his shoulders, recorded his maiden century at Woodvale alongside Farhan. I think everyone involved at Woodvale would thank and congratulate Michael for his dedicated work in his three years as captain. On the bowling front there has been stand out performances from Lewis Adair with 4-28 against Donaghcloney and Thomas Hill with 5-58 against Derriaghy.

Due to a free weekend, having taken the decision to not participate in the National Cup, the next  fixture for the 1st XI is a trip to Seapark on Saturday 20 May to take on Holywood in the Challenge Cup. This will be a tough fixture for the 1st XI as Holywood have also began their campaign with back to back wins so far this season.

The 2nd XI have also had a change of leadership as Leslie Irwin has decided to step back from captaincy with Philip Stewart taking over. The first league game of the campaign was played at Ballygomartin Road against Derriaghy. The game proved to be a close run thing with the 2nds eventually winning by just one run.

The 3rd XI, under the captaincy of Colin Storey, have played the most games thus far. As is often the case, early season availability has affected Colin Storey and his side in respect of selection. In their most recent encounter the 3rd XI defeated Lauralvale 2nds at Ballygomartin Road following two defeats to both Derriaghy and Lisburn, both played away at Quennsway and Wallace Park respectively.

All in all it has been a respectable start to the 2017 campaign. The players will be hopeful that the good weather in recent weeks will return once again and a few more wins collected on the board.
