Continued Improvement at Ballygomartin Road

Sunday 21st May 2017

Woodvale have again shown their appetite to improve facilities at the Ballygomartin Road and with the powers that be at the club working feverishly behind the scenes securing generous funding of Sport N.I. the stadium is almost unrecognisable from when I first walked in 30 years ago.

All four sides of the ground are now netted, protecting the surrounding accommodation and Forthriver car park to the best of the clubs capabilities and saving a few lost cricket balls in the process.

These improvements have taken their toll though and for the first few weeks of the season the boundary rope will have to be brought in, reducing the playing area, until the new growth of grass takes hold.

Two work party weekends saw the pre-season work carried out, with no fewer than a dozen budding Llewelyn Bowens painting anything that didn’t move. (Jim Bowen more like).

All we can hope for now is the weather to improve to allow tireless groundsman ‘Bounce’ Kirker to carry on the stirling work on his beloved square.

Next on the agenda is a groundsmans hut, scorers hut and electronic score board, all scheduled to be in place in the not too distant future.

Early season form would suggest Jamie Gibson's 1st XI like to bat so, shorter boundaries and decent track make Woodvale a very attractive destination for a day out at the cricket.
